Can I use a parking post as a security bollard?

    3-driveway-post

It’s a common question that we get asked fairly often here at Bollard Security. You might be thinking to yourself ‘What’s the difference really?’, or ‘Surely they’re the same thing?’. Well, the truth of the matter is that parking posts aren’t suited to work as an effective substitute for driveway bollards, and there’s a few reasons for this.

We’ve been in the security bollard business for almost 20 years, and our range of products range from residential parking posts for your home, to heavy duty security bollards for your commercial business. With our years of experience in this area, we’ve got the knowledge to tell you firsthand that using a parking post as a security bollard is generally not a good idea. Here’s why.

Why you shouldn’t use a parking post as a security bollard

To put it simply, they’re not strong enough. Parking posts are designed and built to reserve and protect your private parking space at your home or business. They’re a popular choice amongst homeowners and residents looking to prevent the inconvenience of having to deal with people parking on their property. A good example being our popular KYP1- fold down parking post, which is budget friendly, and easy to operate, install and service.

However, parking posts are not suitable replacements for security bollards because the former is simply not as strong as the latter. They’re mainly used for stopping people passing by from using your driveway as a quick place to park, but they’re not designed to use as deterrents against potential car thieves.

What should I use to sure up the security of my driveway?

Our driveway security bollards are designed with the aim of providing a strong, stable deterrent against potential vehicle thieves, giving you a secure steel barrier that serves as a line of defence between your property and any potential intruders. They’re a popular choice used by our customers throughout the UK, and they can benefit you immeasurably in increasing the security of your residence.

Telescopic bollards are extremely versatile in their design, easily deployed, and discreetly stowed away – perfect for any environment. Looking for some recommendations? Here are just a few of our options for residential security bollards:

    • KTP3P Heavy Duty Telescopic Bollard – one of our more popular residential bollards. Affordable, simple to install and service, and easy to operate. Suitable as a deterrent for both pesky parkers and potential vehicle thieves.
    • S14 670 Heavy Duty lift assisted bollard – classed as an anti ram bollard, and secondly, it’s an insurance company approved product. It’s ideally suited to all residential applications, and especially useful if you require a high level of security for say, protecting a large vehicle or motor home.
    • R14 LA Lift assisted telescopic bollard – awarded the Sold Secure and Secure By Design accreditation. Made from galvanised steel with a powder coated colour of your choice, the R14 LA is easy to operate and requires very little maintenance.

When it comes to driveway security, we highly advise against cutting corners and settling for a parking post with the intention of using it as a security bollard. It’s better to play it safe rather than take a risk.
